MTI Portable Satellite Communication Terminals Recognized as IEEE Milestone
Hsinchu, Taiwan – 20 June 2023 – Microelectronics Technology Incorporation (MTI) announced today that the company’s Portable Satellite Communication Terminals, designed between 1987 and 1995, has been honored an IEEE Milestone by the esteemed Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineer (IEEE). This is the first in Taiwan to receive the prestigious IEEE Milestone recognition.
The IEEE is the world's largest technical professional organization dedicated to advancing technology for humanity. The IEEE Milestones Program honors prominent technological achievements in the area of electrical, electronics, information and communications that occurred at least twenty-five years ago and that have had a significant impact on the advancement of engineering, science, and society. Since the start of the program in 1983, more than 200 IEEE Milestones have been awarded, including historical breakthroughs such as Benjamin Franklin's work on electricity and the electrical telegraph in 1751, First Breaking of Enigma Code in 1932-39, Invention of the First Transistor at Bell Telephone Laboratories, Inc., in 1974, etc. This accolade signifies MTI’s remarkable contribution to the satellite communication system and the society through technological advancements.
MTI pioneered the development of transportable satellite communication terminals suitable for use in extreme environments. Offering global voice, telex, and data connectivity in a remarkably compact form factor, MTI’s technology helped rescuers bring aid to disaster zones, reporters communicate news from war zones, and expeditions explore remote mountains and deserts.
Here are some prominent use of MTI’s Transportable Communication System (TCS; designed between 1987 and 1995):
- During the Persian Gulf War in 1991, MTI’s TCS enabled Peter Arnett and his team from the Cable News Network (CNN) to be the only broadcaster in Iraq capable of sending live reports back to America. In the aftermath of the war, CNN was propelled to new heights by pioneering the concept of 24-hour news and gained enough traction that it cemented its position among the titans of television.
- MTI’s TCS overcame communication blind spots and fulfilled the prospect of worldwide communication. In May 1993, a team of international climbers from Taiwan and China conquered the summit and transmitted from Mount Everest. Throughout the expedition, it was MTI’s TCS that they carried with them to communicate through the snowy peaks. MTI’s TCS also proved invaluable in the crossing of the Taklamakan Desert, a joint expedition between England and China, in September 1993. For the whole 53 days of walking, MTI’s TCS was their lifeline and the only way of reaching out.
- In 1999, the infamous Jiji (921) earthquake with a magnitude of 7.3 on the Richter scale devastated Taiwan. In this disaster, power was cut, as power stations, transmission stations, and nuclear power plants were down. Bridges and highways were badly damaged too. As traffic and communication systems were destroyed along other infrastructures, Chunghwa Telecom Company with the help of MTI, were able to establish Digital Radio in the wreckage, restoring the local telephone communication network, and erect emergency communication stations in mountain areas.
The IEEE Milestone achievement reinforces MTI’s unwavering dedication to technological excellence and positive impact on society. MTI enables communication where it was deemed impossible before.
The company’s pioneering work has propelled the satellite industry forward, with the ultimate goal of establishing a seamless communication network that leaves no blind spot on the globe.
